Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is forcing a vote to oust Speaker Johnson over Ukraine aid

WASHINGTON — Far-right Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., made good on her threat Wednesday and filed a motion to oust Republican Speaker Mike Johnson from power over his decision to pass billions of dollars in military aid for Ukraine.

She was booed by colleagues as she formally announced the effort on the House floor.

Johnson’s GOP allies are in a strong position to beat back Greene’s efforts given that Democratic leaders said on April 30 that their rank-and-file members will step in and vote to “table” or dismiss Greene’s motion to vacate the speaker’s chair.

That would at least temporarily save Johnson’s job, though the fact that Democrats cast votes to keep him in power is sure to infuriate conservative activists and outside groups. And nothing would prevent Greene or any other conservative foe from forcing another vote on Johnson’s fate down the road.

“Mike Johnson is officially the Democrat Speaker of the House. … What slimy back room deal did Johnson make for the Democrats’ support?” Greene said in a statement before filing her motion. Johnson has said he made no such deal with Democrats.

“He should resign, switch parties, and continue voting for Biden’s open border invasion of America, endless wars, full term abortion on demand, trans agenda on children, warrantless spying on the American people, weaponizing government against President Trump and his supporters, and every other Democrat wishlist item he’s handed over,” Greene continued.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
