Four Fun Things | Cup of Jo

Holly Howe bathroom London

I love seeing a single family photo hung on a wall, or taped somewhere slightly random — it feels like a surprise treat. Above, I leaned a snapshot of my dad and Anton on my bedroom bookcase; Liz Libré taped up her baby’s sonogram; and Holly Howe put a wedding photo next to the bathroom sink. They all make me smile.

Jenny Rosenstrach care package

Our beloved Jenny came up with a brilliant care-package formula: book + beauty product + baked good. You make it personal by choosing items “based on the recipient’s literary and baked good proclivities,” she says. Thoughts? Two of my loved ones are recovering from surgeries, and I’m grateful for this game plan.

Joanna Goddard Cornwall

Looking ahead to spring and summer, I’m stocking up on my all-time favorite sunscreen — with the best best best scent — which is on sale right now. Any other beauty finds you’ve been loving lately?

New Yorker short stories

The New Yorker’s short stories are consistently excellent — like, Emma Cline’s creepy Upstate and Rebecca Makkai’s rollicking The Plaza — and last night, I was DELIGHTED to climb into bed, flip open the current issue, and see Colm Tóibín’s byline. The Irish author writes some of my favorite books (Long Island, most recently), which chronicle the inner worlds of reserved Irish characters so vividly that they end up feeling like page turners. I passed out before getting too far into the story, but tonight my plan is to take a long walk and listen to Tóibín read it himself.

P.S. More fun things, and five home decor ideas I love.
