Michael Kors celebrates its new Colby bag with an immersive Parisian pop-up
On April 26, customers and fashion-savvy citizens will be able to explore the new Michael Kors pop-up store, located within a contemporary gallery in the trendy Marais neighborhood on the city’s right bank.
The ephemeral boutique will be open until May 12, and will host the focal shoulder bag for Spring/Summer 2024: the Colby. With this new star accessory, the Capri Holdings-owned brand (which was acquired last year by Tapestry, American marque Coach’s parent group) is aiming to attract a more fashion-forward, youthful clientele.
The East West-shaped bag is reminiscent of those of fashion’s decade du jour, the nineties, and is meant to be used both to spice up a casual day look or to go out on a night on the town. It is adorned with a big silver buckle – like that of a belt’s – which stands out as the bag’s statement detail, as well as dual front pockets for a modern approach to practicality.
Upon entering, guests will be submerged in a three-room, 89-square meter interior evoking the bag’s campaign, which was shot by Mert Alas during a sunny day by a Californian poolside. Guests will be able to admire behind-the-scenes videos and other campaign imagery of models sunbathing with their Colby’s floating besides them on a tower of stacked-up old televisions sets from the nineties. The walls of the venue, plastered with darkened fabric, are supposed to filter light in a way to also reflect the hazy summer days in Los Angeles.
In another demonstration of sensorial, experiential shopping, the Michael Kors pop-up also features a second room, covered in mirrors as a wink – yet again – to the Colby campaign. The seven different color ranges of the bag are on display in this impressive space, and can be admired in a zebra print, a lemon yellow or a stark silver.
It is in the third and final area of the pop-up that guests will experience an interactive activity meant to create a buzz factor and generate social media content. Indeed, potential shoppers will have the opportunity to have their instant Polaroid taken, printed out and sent to them via email with the tag #ColbyByKors on the bottom right of the layout. For the photo, guests can choose to pick a Colby bag of their choosing and pose against a backdrop that mimics the inside of an actual pool thanks to visual effects, mounted props and dynamic lighting.
To celebrate the launch of the Colby, a cocktail party was thrown within the pop-up space on Thursday night. Twin brother DJs Doppelgänger Duo blasted pop-induced house music tunes and champagne was flowing. Or a real Malibu pool party moment in the center of the French capital.
The Colby bag, 350 euros: available from April 26 onwards at Michael Kors stores, selected retailers and via the brand’s website.
