Texas Supreme Court rejects challenge to abortion ban over medical exceptions
The Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected a challenge to the state’s strict abortion ban. The lawsuit was filed last year by a group of women who had serious pregnancy complications.
The ruling was unanimous. All of the nine justices are Republicans.
The women who brought the lawsuit said they were denied abortions even when issues arose during pregnancy that endangered their lives. The plaintiffs had not sought to repeal the ban, but rather to force clarification and transparency as to the precise circumstances in which exceptions are allowed.
Critics of Texas’ abortion ban, among the most restrictive in the U.S., have said it does not provide enough clarity.
